This is a question we get frequently. Most new cars come with synthetic oil in the crank case and most people are used to having their oil changed every 3000 miles, which is great if you are using conventional oil in your engine. However, like most things, there is a history behind oil changes.
Back in the day, when combustion engines were new, it was recommended that you actually change your oil every 1000 miles. Then, as engines became better designed and more efficient, it became 3000 miles. Since synthetic oil has a much slower rate of decay, 10,000 miles is the new standard. If you are really cautious and want to err on that side, you could get your synthetic oil changed every 7500 miles.
