A customer remarked the other day that her mileage was 3-4 mpg better in the summer time than in the winter, according to her car’s computer. She asked, why? The are a couple of reasons why that happens. For one, your engine runs less efficiently when it is cold and that alone will make your winter mileage slightly worse.
Another factor is that in the winter, we are more often inclined to take many short trips and do less walking which lowers gas mileage averages just as in the summer we are inclined to take longer trips on the highway which increases gas mileage averages.
